Does Skin Need Sunscreen in Winter?

Yes — and this is one of the most consistently misunderstood facts in skincare. Winter sun is not a lesser threat; it's simply a less obvious one.

Why Winter Sun Feels Less Dangerous

Cooler temperatures create a false sense of safety — the physical sensation of heat is what most people associate with sun damage risk, but UV radiation and temperature are not the same thing. You can experience significant UV exposure on a cold, clear winter day.

What Actually Determines UV Risk

UV index is driven by sun angle, altitude, and cloud cover — not air temperature. Pakistan's winter UV index remains meaningful in most regions, particularly at higher altitudes where UV intensity actually increases relative to sea level, regardless of cold temperatures.

Cloud Cover Doesn't Block UV

Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud cover, meaning an overcast winter day still delivers meaningful sun exposure. This is one of the most common reasons people skip sunscreen without realising the risk hasn't actually decreased.

The Cumulative Damage Argument

Skin damage from UV exposure is cumulative over years, not just from single intense exposures. Skipping sunscreen for the 3-4 winter months every year, even if each individual day carries lower risk than peak summer, adds up to meaningful cumulative exposure over time.

The Practical Fix

Continue the same SPF 50 Sunscreen used in summer, applied every morning regardless of visible sunshine or temperature. This is the one product that genuinely doesn't need seasonal adjustment.

Indoor Exposure Counts Too

UVA rays — the type most associated with long-term collagen breakdown and premature ageing — penetrate window glass. Time spent near windows, whether at home or in a car, contributes to cumulative exposure even without direct outdoor sun.
