Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid — AHA — and the most extensively researched exfoliant in skincare. Unlike salicylic acid, which is oil-soluble and works inside pores, glycolic acid is water-soluble and works on the skin's surface. It is the smallest AHA molecule used in skincare, which is exactly why it works the way it does — smaller molecules penetrate the skin surface more readily than larger AHAs, breaking the bonds between dead skin cells and accelerating the shedding process that naturally slows with age or in skin stressed by heat, pollution, and sun damage. The result is smoother texture, brighter tone, and a surface that reflects light more evenly — visible improvement that happens at a cellular level, not just cosmetically.
For Pakistani skin, glycolic acid addresses concerns that other actives cannot as directly: the rough, uneven texture that accumulates from sun exposure and environmental damage, the dull tone that comes from a build-up of dead cells slowing the skin's natural renewal, and the hyperpigmented surface cells that make dark spots appear more prominent than the underlying pigmentation actually warrants. It does not penetrate into pores the way Salicylic Acid does, so it is not the first choice for active acne — but it is highly effective for the surface pigmentation and texture that acne often leaves behind.
Why 7% is the right working concentration:
Glycolic acid's exfoliating effect depends on both concentration and pH. At 7%, formulated within the active pH range, it delivers consistent chemical exfoliation without the sensitisation risk of professional-strength peels. It is effective enough to produce visible results on texture and tone while being suitable for regular use at home. Below 5%, AHA exfoliation is mild to the point of marginal results. Above 10%, the risk of irritation and barrier disruption increases substantially for daily use. Glycolic Acid also increases sun sensitivity for up to a week after application — Pakistan's intense year-round UV makes daily SPF non-negotiable during use, not optional.
Which Glycolic Acid Product Do You Need?
| Product | Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Glycolic Acid 7% Toner | Face | Texture, dullness, pore congestion |
| Glycolic Acid 7% Toner Combo | Face | Toner + Ceramide Moisturiser — complete AHA routine with barrier support included |
| AHA/BHA Body Wash | Body | Back acne, strawberry legs, ingrown hairs |
Never use the Toner and Body Wash on the same day — Glycolic Acid on face and body simultaneously is over-exfoliation.
The Glycolic Acid 7% Toner Combo pairs the toner with the 10% Ceramide Complex Cream Moisturiser — the correct pairing for AHA use. Glycolic acid exfoliates; ceramides repair and protect the barrier that exfoliation temporarily disrupts. Used together, they prevent the dryness and sensitivity that AHA use without barrier support can cause, making consistent use comfortable and sustainable.
Introducing Glycolic Acid — Phased by Week
The biggest mistake new AHA users make is starting at full frequency. Glycolic Acid at 7% requires gradual buildup to prevent over-exfoliation, redness, and barrier damage.
Weeks 1-2:
- Twice weekly, evening only
Weeks 3-4:
- Three to four times weekly if no irritation
Week 5+ — Maintenance (permanent cap):
- Maximum 3-4 nights per week, even at established tolerance — this is a leave-on exfoliant, and daily use without barrier-rest nights causes cumulative damage, persistent redness, and barrier breakdown over time
Glycolic Acid Results — What to Expect
Over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use, most people see visibly smoother rough texture, softer surface fine lines, faded mild surface pigmentation, and improved overall radiance. A visible glow often appears within about 2 weeks, with fuller texture improvement by weeks 4-6.
How to Pair Glycolic Acid With Other Actives
Pairs well with:
- Ceramide Moisturiser — mandatory after every application. Repairs the barrier and replenishes water lost to surface exfoliation.
- Niacinamide — excellent companion. Strengthens the barrier weakened by AHA use and reduces post-exfoliation redness.
- Hyaluronic Acid — replaces surface hydration removed during exfoliation.
Use with caution (alternate nights):
- Salicylic Acid Serum — both are active exfoliants working through different mechanisms. Same-night use significantly increases over-exfoliation risk. Many people benefit from both on alternate nights — for example Glycolic Acid Monday/Wednesday, Salicylic Acid Tuesday/Thursday.
- Retinol — also accelerates cell turnover. Combining increases irritation without added benefit.
Do not combine in the same step:
- Vitamin C — different pH requirements reduce effectiveness of both. Use Vitamin C in the morning, Glycolic Acid at night — this also covers exfoliation overnight and antioxidant brightening in the morning with no overlap.
The Mandatory Rules
- Maximum 3-4 nights per week — even at full tolerance, this is not a daily product
- Never combine with Retinol or Salicylic Acid Serum on the same night — alternate nights instead
- SPF 50 every morning — non-negotiable. Glycolic Acid increases sun sensitivity for up to a week after each use
- Always follow with a Ceramide Moisturiser — this is critical, not optional, after AHA use
- Patch test if you have sensitive skin — start at half frequency
- Generally considered a lower-risk option than higher-strength Salicylic Acid formulations during pregnancy, but always consult your doctor before use
