Alpha arbutin is a skin-brightening ingredient derived from the bearberry plant. Like kojic acid, it works by inhibiting tyrosinase — the enzyme that converts UV exposure, inflammation, and hormonal signals into melanin production. Alpha arbutin is a glycosylated form of hydroquinone, which means it delivers a similar brightening mechanism without the irritation and regulatory concerns associated with hydroquinone itself.
What distinguishes alpha arbutin from other tyrosinase inhibitors is its stability and tolerance profile. It is water-soluble, highly stable in formulation, and well-tolerated even by sensitive skin types that react to kojic acid or vitamin C at higher concentrations. For Pakistani skin dealing with persistent hyperpigmentation where other brightening ingredients have caused sensitivity, alpha arbutin is often the gentler alternative that still delivers meaningful results.
Alpha arbutin works most effectively in combination with other brightening ingredients. Used alongside kojic acid, it inhibits tyrosinase through a complementary mechanism — the two together address melanin production more thoroughly than either does alone. Used with vitamin C, it adds a second inhibition pathway on top of vitamin C's antioxidant and brightening effects. This stacking approach is why alpha arbutin appears as a supporting ingredient across multiple SkinFactor formulations targeting pigmentation and uneven tone.
For products that combine alpha arbutin with kojic acid and vitamin C in targeted formulations, see the Kojic Acid and Vitamin C ingredient ranges, or browse the full Pigmentation collection for the complete anti-dark-spot product lineup.
