Retinol vs Vitamin C — Which One First, and Can You Use Both?

RETINOL VS VITAMIN C

Retinol vs Vitamin C — Which One First, and Can You Use Both?

Retinol and Vitamin C are two of the most powerful ingredients in skincare, and one of the most common mistakes is trying to use them together in the same routine to "double the results." This doesn't work the way people expect — here's the correct way to use both.

The Short Answer

Vitamin C in the morning. Retinol at night. Never combine them in the same application.

This isn't a compromise — it's the correct way to use both ingredients at their full strength.

Why They Don't Belong in the Same Routine

Vitamin C works during the day. Its core function is neutralising the free radicals generated by UV rays and pollution exposure — a job that requires daylight to be truly effective. Applied at night, it simply isn't protecting your skin from those daytime stressors.

Retinol works at night. It degrades in sunlight and significantly increases photosensitivity, which is why it's formulated for evening use only. It also has a different optimal pH than Vitamin C, and combining acidic Vitamin C with Retinol in the same application can reduce Retinol's effectiveness while increasing the risk of irritation.

Rather than being restrictive, this approach is actually more effective: each ingredient is used when it performs best, allowing you to get the maximum benefit from both.

The Correct Routine

Morning:

Evening:

  • Retinol Serum (following the gradual introduction protocol)
  • Moisturiser

This split allows Vitamin C to defend your skin against UV rays and environmental pollution during the day, while Retinol works uninterrupted overnight to support collagen production and healthy skin renewal.

What Happens If You Use Them Together Anyway?

Applying both ingredients in the same routine doesn't multiply the benefits. Instead, it can increase irritation, reduce Retinol's effectiveness due to pH differences, and if Retinol is used during the day, it may leave your skin more sensitive to sunlight when UV exposure is at its highest.

If you've been layering both together and experiencing redness, dryness or irritation, this could be the reason.

Do You Need Both, or Just One?

If your main concern is fine lines, wrinkles, texture and firmness:
Retinol is the stronger choice and remains one of the most clinically studied anti-ageing ingredients available without a prescription.

If your main concern is dullness, uneven skin tone or pigmentation with only early signs of ageing:
Vitamin C paired with daily SPF may be all you need.

If you want both anti-ageing and brightening benefits:
Use Vitamin C in the morning and Retinol at night. This is the most complete approach and allows both ingredients to perform at their best without interfering with one another.

The Complete Kit Approach

The Retinol Anti-Ageing Kit is designed around an effective evening Retinol routine with barrier-supporting products included. Pairing it with the Vitamin C Serum in your morning routine gives you a complete day-and-night skincare regimen without any timing conflicts.
