Do I Need a Toner?
Do I Need a Toner?
One of the most common beginner questions — and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what kind of toner, and what you're trying to achieve.
Two Very Different Categories Share One Name
"Toner" historically referred to a hydrating, pH-balancing step after cleansing. Today, many products called "toner" are actually leave-on exfoliating treatments — like the Glycolic Acid Toner — which function more like a serum than the traditional hydrating toner concept.
Do Beginners Need a Hydrating Toner?
Not as a required step. If your cleanser is well-formulated and doesn't leave skin feeling stripped, a separate hydrating toner is optional rather than essential — the moisturiser step already covers hydration.
Do Beginners Need an Exfoliating Toner?
No — not yet. An exfoliating acid toner is a treatment-level active ingredient, not a basic step, and belongs later in your skincare journey once the fundamentals are established. Introducing this alongside a first-ever routine increases irritation risk unnecessarily.
When an Exfoliating Toner Becomes Worth Adding
Once your 3-step foundation routine is comfortable and you've successfully introduced one treatment serum (typically Niacinamide), an exfoliating toner like Glycolic Acid becomes a reasonable next addition for texture and dullness concerns — always introduced gradually, starting at 2-3 uses per week.
The Simple Answer
As a true beginner, skip toner entirely. Master cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen first. If dullness or texture becomes a specific concern once that foundation is solid, an exfoliating toner is worth considering — not before.
